The FDA’s advisory agency is due to review the potential risks of Viagra in the U. S. and the possible effects on the heart and kidneys.
While the drug, called sildenafil, is prescribed for the treatment of angina (chest pain) in the elderly, it has also been linked to an increased risk of heart attack, stroke and kidney problems.
Sildenafil (the generic name for Viagra) was already widely available on the internet, but was removed from the market last year after safety and efficacy data were presented to the FDA.
This month, the FDA will issue an advisory advising consumers to avoid taking the generic drug. It’s also the first time that the drug has been linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular events.
The agency has yet to decide whether it will take action against Viagra or any other drug.
In a statement to Bloomberg, the agency said: “While the FDA continues to examine the safety and efficacy of sildenafil, it has not yet made any statements regarding the risk of cardiovascular events associated with the use of sildenafil.”
